But
the zufolo couldn’t sit still in one place.
2,000 years ago the Greeks took up this lilting instrument. Later,
when they occupied Sicily, they took the zufolo with them.
The zufolo found a new home in Sicily where for centuries
shepherds took their comforting pipe with them for the long sheep
grazing period from autumn, through the long mountain winter, to
spring.
This
is the tradition of the zufolo, that Joe learned from his
own grandfather and now happily keeps alive here in Australia.
